Theraputic activities are those activities that are individually therapeutic. Such activities should be more than watching TV or listening to music. Therapeutic activities should involve the individual in psychosocial activities that bring the individual into appropriate social interaction with others. Such activities should enable the individual a medium around which to relate to others and should offer the individual the opportunity to become good at something. One such activity that makes an excellent therapeutic activity is playing a musical instrument. As a result, our residents are encouraged to play musical instruments by themselves and in groups. We welcome residents bringing their musical instruments, and Dr. Belcher routinely gives harmonicas to residents that don't play other instruments, because they are inexpensive and easy to learn. Other activities that have had the similar effects include learning and practicing karate, art, singing, and wood working. Sellers of instruments include: HarpDepot.com; HarpExpress.com; 1st-In-Harmonicas.com; DocsUkuleles.com; DocsGuitarDepot.com; DocsMusicCenter.com; and, DocsMusicResourcs. |
