For the Chronically Mentally Ill,

A Good Home Can Be Hard To Find.

Nursing homes are for people with medical problems of a longer term nature than can be accommo-dated in a hospital. Yes, the chronically mentally ill do develop such illness and do frequently need placement in a long term care facility. Such facilities require a Level Of Care (LOC), and provide ICF or SNF care. If a mentally ill individual needs such care, seek out the best nursing home that provides such care. Be ready to go through the problems of obtaining a LOC of care. Seek out a mental health professional to help with the process. Don't let anyone fool you, all nursing homes are not equal when it comes to serving the mentally ill. There are nursing homes that have specialized in serving the chroically mentally ill for years. There are many other nursing homes that have "become" specialized in serving the mentally ill in order to remedy a low occupancy. However, it takes about five years to develop the staff and facility expertise to do a really good job with the chronically mentally ill. Therefore, if you want the best, and who wouldn't, seek out the long term care facility that has been specializing for more than five years. If an individual qualifies for a nursing home placement, with the appropriate LOC, Medicaid will play the bulk of the cost of care.
